Dental Implants

A secure, long term option to replace missing teeth in Chelmsford

When a tooth is lost, whether from a long term dental problem or an accident, the results can have a major impact on our appearance, especially if the tooth is a highly visible front one. As well as aesthetic issues, we also lose some function as the tooth is no longer available to help chew our food.

When this happens, there are a number of options available to replace the missing tooth, with bridges and dentures commonly being used.
Increasingly though, dental implants are becoming the most popular and preferred method for replacing missing teeth as they offer not only a realistic looking replacement tooth, but one that offers a strength and security that no other method can match.

What are dental implants?

The dental implant is a small screw like object which is made from titanium or titanium alloy. This is placed into the jawbone of the patient where it fuses with the bone, thereby holding it strongly in place. The implant, in effect, replaces the root structure of a natural tooth. A crown is then attached, via an abutment, to replace the missing tooth.

Placing a dental implant

At Goodleigh Dental Practice in Chelmsford, we have a highly trained implant dentist who has successfully placed many dental implants over the years.

Before the actual procedure, an examination will be made, along with x-rays and scans. This is to determine two things; firstly, whether the patient has sufficient bone into which to place the implant, and secondly, to determine the exact placement position.

Where insufficient bone structure is present, options such as a bone graft are available. Most patients though, will not have this problem.
Once the positioning has been determined, a local anaesthetic will be given to numb the area and a hole drilled and the implant then placed into the jawbone. The implant will then be left for approximately three months to allow time for the bone to fuse with the implant.

Once this period of time has passed, an abutment will be placed on the implant which allows the dental crown to be added. Once this has been completed, the patient will have not only a replacement tooth that looks natural but one that feels very natural too.

Advantages of dental implants

Titanium, it is the only metal which allows osseointegration (the fusing of bone and the metal) and it is this which gives dental implants their key benefits.

Due to their strength, a full range of foods can be eaten and cleaning the teeth is done in the same manner as with a natural tooth. Naturally, we will need you to visit our Chelmsford dental practice from time to time for check-ups to ensure that the implant is healthy, but otherwise, twenty years or more of a strong and healthy replacement tooth can be expected.
